MARAZUL started as a solution to a problem I guess, I had been living in New York and travelling all over the world running large scale events and I had been really struggling to find something to wear that would really work with me in my job. I needed something hard wearing, easy to throw on, throw in a bag, something made from a beautiful fabric that allowed it to be smart as well as practical. So, I made my own. This is sort of how it started, creating something to really live in. My first jumpsuit was born from an incredible piece of fabric I picked up on a trip to India.

When I then moved to Central America, I was meeting all these incredible women who also wanted something easy to live in. I became fascinated by the women who wanted to wear the pieces, their stories and their adventures, this drove and continues to drive, what I do. Creating hard wearing pieces for people in their everyday lives.
The uniform element of MARAZUL is something that I feel embodies everything I love and care about. I am able to work with people and brands to design something that will really work for them, which means (hopefully) it will last much longer, I choose the fabrics based on how it will be worn, tailor elements to suit the individuals needs– it’s a really involved and hands on process. I choose each fabric for each design, working with a lot of end of roll or vintage pieces where I can, I have an amazing network of textile dealers who get in touch when they have something they think I will like. I am completely fascinated by fabric, particularly pieces that have already had a life.

The idea is, if you have a single really well made, considered piece, you are less inclined to keep buying more. It's that idea of a capsule wardrobe but with uniform, you can wear the jacket to ‘work’ but also out on a walk, to see your friends. It goes everywhere with you.
Three years ago I moved all the production to Cornwall, my friend set up a production house in Penzance and she and I create all the pieces together. Being able to be so close to the process is really important, particularly as everything is so bespoke. I think the thing I want everyone to know about us ,is everything about MARAZUL is so very considered, from discussing the design elements to sourcing the fabric to searching for the perfect glaze for a ceramic button we will use on a jacket, I feel really strongly that there is nothing that feels ‘off the shelf’ about it.
It also matters to me that you feel passionately about what you do, I think that really comes through in your work. I love where I live, I love being outside as much as I can, to be by the sea, whether that’s being swept away by the winds in the winter or basking on a rock in the summer. I feel very fortunate that my studio is in the village I live in, I make a point of going for a walk or a swim or a run throughout the day and that idea of life intertwining itself with your work, is what I hope comes through in MARAZULS identity, because it's sort of my identity too.

MARAZUL has been a real learning curve, I had no experience in fashion before, only a complete love of textiles and I think I do still lean on this to inform decisions, how I think the fabric will work or elements of a design I think we can tailor based on elements in a particular linen or canvas we want to work with.
There are no end of incredibly talented designers and makers, particularly where I live in Cornwall, I think we are so lucky to be able to be surrounded by such a wealth of people who really, really know their craft. It’s so easy sometimes to look at others and think, ok that’s so great… what am I doing?! But, it's also incredible how lucky we are to be pushed forward by others.
The greatest joy of MARAZUL has been the people I have been able to design for, such a range of designers, makers, jewellers, producers, mothers, brothers, growers, chefs, artists, waiters, brides, grooms… I love to hear the stories of where the pieces go, how they are worn and used. Seeing an old jumpsuit from my first collection on someone I bump into in the pub, the indigo is so washed and worn, the knees are re-patched through over use and it looks really, really well worn and loved!

MARAZUL Uniform as its own identity is where we are moving to next, that’s launching early this year. These are a collection of designs that sit as ‘templates’, so you can pick, say, your jacket shape as a base, we can then move or add or take away pockets, collars, zips etc. We work with you to choose colourways to suit your brand, embroider or print logos on pockets, sleeves or collars. Making sustainable uniform for larger orders, accessible but staying true to the values we have held since the beginning.
